Latest news concerning the technical inspection of motorcycles

The beginning of 2024 will mark the launch of technical inspections for motorcycles. The Minister of Transport confirmed that this measure would be gradually rolled out and provided details on this subject.

Following an injunction from the Council of State (under pressure from associations) due to the government's inaction, implementation was planned for August 1, but the Minister announced thata meeting with biker representatives would take place later in the year.

The Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, recently gave an interview to Brut in which he provided additional information on motorcycle technical inspections and their timetable. So, from early 2024, the oldest motorcycles and scooters will be subject to inspection.

The inspection period will extend from January 15 to March 15, but only for vehicles registered before January 1, 2017.

The implementation will be done gradually until January 1, 2027 in order to avoid saturation of the control centers.

Another important question concerned the inclusion of different types of motorized two-wheelers. Clément Beaune specified that motorcycles of 125 cm3 and above, as well as mopeds of less than 125 cm3, would be subject to compulsory technical inspection. All category L vehicles will therefore be affected.

The frequency of inspections will be 5 years after the first registration, then every three years. This rhythm is more spaced out compared to that of cars, which require an inspection after 4 years, then every 2 years.

The technical control itself will be considerably simplified, with approximately four times fewer checkpoints than for cars. Details of checkpoints are specified in the draft order.

Finally, the Minister confirmed the objective of keeping the cost of control around 50 euros. However, the final decision on this point will rest with the control centers.
