2024 motorcycle technical inspection and customization

A little clarification about the Motorcycle inspection planned for 2024 because we hear everything and its opposite on social networks regarding motorcycle modifications.

As Jean-Marc Belotti, president of the FFMC-Paris, reminds us, motorcycle technical inspection is a Security controle, and not compliance.

Technical inspection agents are not authorized to check the conformity of motorcycle parts. A private technical inspection center should not be confused with a public organization like the DREAL which takes care of approving vehicles.

These are separate entities, the operation in France is different from Germany or Spain on this subject.

The control will therefore be carried out on thesecurity elements of a motorcycle such as tires, lighting, braking, etc.

To understand simply, take cars as an example. There are plenty of tuning cars on French roads and it has an MOT.

Braking system

• Brake fluid level
• Condition of brake pads and discs
• Good operation
• Brake test

Lighting

• Presence of elements
• Operation of the different elements: indicators, front and rear lights, brake lights.

Tires

• Wear control

Transmission

• Condition of the chain, belt or universal joint kit.

Engine

• Check for possible leaks. (Oil and, if applicable, coolant)

The counter

• Presence and good working order

Honk

• Presence and good working order

Steering and suspension

• Checking correct operation

An exhaust sound check could be added, and perhaps a pollution check depending on the year of the bike.

Basic checks and controls which are already carried out on most motorcycles by mechanics during servicing or interventions.

How can I ensure that my modified motorcycle passes the motorcycle inspection?

If all safety features are revised, in good condition and functional, you will have your technical inspection. Even if you have changed your handlebars, your saddle or your front headlight.
